A dominant figure for Preston in the VFA, Terry Alexander arrived at Collingwood amidst a storm of controversy, accepting a five-year ban from the Association to cross to Victoria Park without a clearance following a transfer fee dispute. Standing an imposing 194cm, he was a massive physical presence for the era, utilized primarily as a rugged forward pocket and relief ruckman to provide a chop-out for star teammate Len Thompson. While he possessed the size and aggression to impact contests, Alexander found himself squeezed by the Magpies' enviable big-man depth, often competing with Thompson and Graeme Jenkin for senior opportunities. After featuring in the 1969 Preliminary Final, he recognised his spot was under threat from the recruitment of fellow giant Bob Heard and departed the VFL to captain-coach Warrnambool in the Hampden League.
