Recruited from Scoresby, Terry Gay was a versatile utility capable of playing as a half-forward or ruck-rover. Standing at 188cm, he provided a mobile option who could drift forward and hit the scoreboard, contributing consistent football during a developmental period for the club. He established himself as a regular senior player in the late 1960s, playing his part in Hawthorn's gradual rise up the ladder under coach John Kennedy Snr. However, his time at Glenferrie Oval concluded at the end of the 1970 season, seeing him depart the club just one year prior to the Hawks' breakthrough premiership triumph in 1971.
