Bio
A prolific Tasmanian spearhead from Clarence, Mayne arrived at Geelong with a formidable reputation after booting a record-equalling 10 goals in the 1970 TANFL Grand Final and topping the league's goalkicking table the following year. Although he had briefly trained with Melbourne as a teenager without breaking through, his senior VFL opportunity came in 1972 when the Cats recruited him to inject potency into their attack. A dangerous medium-sized forward with strong hands and instinctive goal sense, he showed glimpses of his talent at Kardinia Park but found it difficult to consistently translate his dominance from the Apple Isle to the VFL. He returned to Tasmania after just two seasons to resume his status as a local superstar, leaving behind a brief cameo in the big league before his premature passing in 1983.
