Bio
Born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia before settling in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, Tew Jiath emerged as a promising talent with the Gippsland Power, following the path of his older brother, Hawthorn defender Changkuoth Jiath. Although he was a member of the Hawks' Next Generation Academy, the athletic defender was snatched up by Collingwood with pick 37 in the 2023 National Draft, a selection that fell just inside the protected range where Hawthorn was blocked from matching the bid. Standing at 188cm, "TJ" plays as an intercepting half-back, utilising his significant vertical leap and speed to disrupt opposition attacks and rebound from defence. He made his AFL debut in memorable circumstances during Round 14, 2024, featuring in the Magpies' historic 54-point comeback victory over North Melbourne. While restricted to a single senior appearance in his maiden season, Jiath remains a high-ceiling prospect developing his craft as a long-term option for Collingwood's backline.
