Bio
Recruited from Birchip in country Victoria, Tim Barling was a 200cm ruckman who initially broke through at Richmond after serving an apprenticeship in the Under 19s. While he appeared to be a long-term prospect for the Tigers, his move to Sydney ahead of the 1986 season turned into a prolonged saga of injury and administration. Barling missed the entire 1986 to 1988 period at senior level, first due to a knee injury and a subsequent salary cap breach that saw his registration denied, forcing him back to local football. Further knee issues, including a reconstruction, delayed his return even longer, but he displayed significant resilience to finally don the red and white in 1989. Ultimately, his body could not sustain the rigours of AFL football, and he retired at the end of 1990.
