Bio
Recruited from Glenelg with pick 28 in the 2012 National Draft, Tim O'Brien spent nearly a decade at Hawthorn where he established himself as a high-flying swingman. Possessing a significant vertical leap and strong contested marking ability, O'Brien was often deployed at either end of the ground, though he battled to find consistency in his output for much of his time at Waverley Park. While he showed glimpses of being a dangerous tall forward capable of taking spectacular marks, his most reliable football often came as an intercept defender, a role he settled into during his final season with the Hawks in 2021.
Seeking a fresh start, O'Brien moved to the Western Bulldogs as an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2022 season, brought in to add depth and aerial presence to the club's backline. However, his tenure at the Whitten Oval was frustrated by recurring soft tissue injuries which prevented him from cementing a regular spot in the senior side. After managing just 18 games across two seasons for the Bulldogs, he was delisted at the end of 2023, concluding his AFL career as a utility player best remembered for his aerial capacity.
