Recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick 26 in the 2014 National Draft, Toby McLean arrived at the Western Bulldogs with a reputation for strong overhead marking despite his smaller stature. Initially deployed as a clever high half-forward, he quickly adapted to the tempo of senior football and became a key component of the Bulldogs' premiership side in just his second season, playing all four finals in the historic 2016 campaign. His agility, tackling pressure, and ability to win contested possession eventually saw him transition into a permanent midfield role, where he proved to be a high-production on-baller capable of drifting forward to impact the scoreboard.

McLean's career trajectory was severely impacted by significant injury setbacks, specifically two anterior cruciate ligament ruptures in 2020 and 2021 that sidelined him for extended periods during his prime years. While he showed resilience to return to AFL level, the depth of the Bulldogs' midfield and the emergence of younger talent made it difficult for him to regain a consistent spot in the best 22. After fighting for opportunities in the VFL and making sporadic senior appearances post-injury, McLean was delisted at the conclusion of the 2023 season, finishing his tenure at the Whitten Oval as a premiership player and centurion.
