Bio
Drafted with pick 37 in the 2006 National Draft via the Oakleigh Chargers, Todd Goldstein arrived at Arden Street with a significant background in junior basketball, a trait that underpinned his deft touch and tap work throughout his career. While he initially served an apprenticeship behind established rucks Hamish McIntosh and David Hale, Goldstein eventually seized the number one mantle and became the centrepiece of the Kangaroos' midfield structure. His ability to play huge percentages of game time without needing a rest allowed North Melbourne to structure their team differently to most opponents, relying on his elite endurance and durability rather than a secondary ruckman.
At his peak, particularly during his dominant 2015 Syd Barker Medal-winning season, Goldstein was widely considered the premier ruckman in the competition. He combined record-breaking hitout numbers—becoming the first player to record 1,000 hitouts in a single season—with the ground-level follow-up work of a fourth midfielder and a reliable set shot forward of centre. He remained fiercely loyal to North Melbourne through various free agency windows, eventually climbing to second on the club's all-time games list and becoming the VFL/AFL all-time record holder for total hitouts.
