Recruited from South Ballarat, Tom Barwick was a Swan Hill native who arrived at Hawthorn during the club's difficult formative years in the VFL. He looked to be a handy acquisition inside 50 when he debuted in the opening round of the 1928 season, slotting two goals in a narrow three-point loss to St Kilda at Glenferrie Oval. Despite this promising start, the medium-sized forward played just one further match against North Melbourne the following week before disappearing from the league's senior ranks. Barwick's life was tragically cut short just over a decade later when he was killed in a road accident near Sea Lake on Boxing Day, 1939, at the age of 32.
