Bio
Recruited from the Gippsland region, Tom Bawden was a versatile big man whose brief VFL career preceded that of his younger brother, Richmond premiership ruckman Bob Bawden. Arriving at Essendon from Morwell after an earlier stint with Leongatha, the 185cm utility was capable of filling roles at half-forward, in the ruck, or across the backline, where he was known for his ability to take a strong contested mark. He broke into the senior side late in the 1934 season, playing five consecutive matches to close out the year, but did not remain at Windy Hill for the following campaign. Bawden subsequently returned to country football, becoming a stalwart for both Leongatha and Morwell in the years leading up to World War II.
