Born in Ballarat to the renowned hotelier Thomas Symington Carlyon—the man behind St Kilda’s iconic Esplanade Hotel—Tom Carlyon was a figure of significant social standing before he ever pulled on a boot. A product of Geelong Grammar, where he distinguished himself as a rower in the school's winning First Eight, he brought a tall, athletic frame (183cm) to the Junction Oval for the 1923 season. His VFL career was ultimately a brief cameo, consisting of just two early-season appearances against Geelong and Fitzroy before he drifted out of the senior lineup. While his contribution to the record books was minimal, Carlyon became a major local identity off the field, taking over the management of "The Espy" and the famous Green Mill dance hall at just 25 years of age, effectively swapping the mud of the football ground for the glamour of Melbourne’s jazz-era nightlife.
