Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers with pick 29 in the 2012 National Draft, Tom Clurey developed into a reliable key defender for Port Adelaide over a decade-long tenure. Possessing impressive closing speed and endurance for his size, he was utilised primarily as a lockdown stopper capable of nullifying tall forwards through disciplined spoiling and bodywork rather than peeling off for intercept possessions. After biding his time in the state league, Clurey cemented his spot in the Power's back six, becoming a defensive mainstay alongside Tom Jonas during the club's minor premiership run in 2020 and subsequent preliminary final appearances.
Despite his consistency during the club's contention window, Clurey's grip on a senior spot loosened in his final years at Alberton. A combination of persistent injury setbacks, including back surgery, and the aggressive recruitment of key defenders Aliir Aliir, Esava Ratugolea, and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher saw him fall down the pecking order. Relegated to the SANFL as depth coverage for the majority of 2023 and 2024, he parted ways with Port Adelaide at the end of the 2024 season, leaving as a 100-game life member who provided 12 seasons of dedicated service in defence.
