Bio
The son of Geelong Brownlow Medallist Paul Couch, Tom Couch took a circuitous route to the AFL, earning his opportunity as a mature-age recruit taken by Melbourne with pick 24 in the 2012 Rookie Draft. Originally overlooked by recruiters, he forced his way onto the list through strong performances in the VFL and elite endurance levels developed during his time as a personal trainer. A contested ball-winner and inside midfielder, Couch made his debut in Round 16, 2012 against Fremantle and played three consecutive matches, bringing a hardened edge to the contest. Despite winning the best and fairest for VFL affiliate Casey Scorpions in 2012, he could not break back into the senior side the following year and was delisted at the end of the 2013 season.
