Bio
Recruited from Yallourn in the Latrobe Valley, Tom Garland was an athletic prospect who notably played soccer as a junior before focusing on Australian rules. He debuted for Richmond in 1963, settling into a role as a half-back flanker where his mobility allowed him to compete effectively against agile forwards. Although he arrived with a reputation as a high-marking target from his country days, he was rarely used in attack at VFL level, kicking just one career goal. Garland struggled to cement a regular spot in the Tigers' defensive unit, departing after two seasons, but he later enjoyed significant success in the Federal League with Murrumbeena, where he became a premiership player and competition Best and Fairest winner.
