Bio
Recruited from Wellington, Tom Maguire holds a permanent place in history as a member of Geelong's inaugural VFL side that faced Essendon in Round 1, 1897. Operating primarily as a flanker, he was a regular fixture during the league's foundation season, playing 12 games and featuring in the finals campaign that saw the Pivotonians finish second. His career was unfortunately curtailed by a severe injury; after dislocating his shoulder in the opening round of the 1898 season against Collingwood, he was forced into premature retirement from VFL football. Maguire eventually returned to play in the lower leagues, leaving the top tier with a brief but significant legacy as a foundation player.
