After refining his craft with Richmond in the VFL, the explosive half-back made an immediate impact at West Coast, setting a club record for disposals on debut against Carlton. Known for his line-breaking pace and high-accumulation game across half-back, McCarthy quickly established himself as a composed ball-user in the Eagles' defence. His seamless transition to the top level saw him play every remaining game of the season, earning a contract extension and cementing his spot in the senior side.
