Bio
Born in the Victorian alpine town of Bright and educated at Wesley College, Tom McLean was a genuine scholar-athlete whose football journey was entirely dictated by his medical career. He initially displayed promise as a teenager with Essendon in the VFA during the mid-1890s before stepping away from the game to focus on his studies at Melbourne University. McLean returned to the elite level with Collingwood in 1900 following a contentious permit dispute, but his stint at Victoria Park was cut short when he accepted a position as the resident surgeon at Geelong Hospital. This professional appointment created one of the most unique dynamics in league history: for three seasons, McLean served simultaneously as Geelong's first-choice full-back and the official club doctor. A rugged defender who balanced on-field physicality with his off-field responsibilities, he eventually retired from the VFL to establish a private practice in Traralgon, where he later served as president of the local football club.
