Bio
Hailing from Long Gully in the Bendigo region, Tom Mercer was one of many country recruits trialled by Hawthorn during the 1933 season as the club sought to lift itself from the bottom of the ladder. Handed the number 1 guernsey, he made his senior debut in Round 8 against Fitzroy at Glenferrie Oval but found the pace of VFL football difficult, failing to register a major statistic in a narrow loss. Mercer was granted only one further opportunity at the top level before falling out of contention, his brief two-game tenure emblematic of the high player turnover at the Mayblooms during the Depression era. He later served his country with distinction, enlisting in the Australian Army for four years during the Second World War.
