Bio
Selected with pick 21 in the 2004 National Draft, Tom Murphy arrived at Hawthorn alongside high-profile draftees Jarryd Roughead, Lance Franklin, and Jordan Lewis. While his cohorts became headline acts, Murphy carved out a career as a selfless, defensive-minded backman capable of matching up on both medium talls and small forwards. Despite his reliability and favour with coach Alastair Clarkson, he often found himself on the fringe of selection during the Hawks' dominant era, notably missing out on the 2008 premiership side as an emergency before eventually playing in the losing 2012 Grand Final against Sydney.
Seeking greater opportunity and a leadership role, Murphy exercised his rights as an unrestricted free agent to join the Gold Coast Suns ahead of the 2013 season. He was immediately added to the Suns' leadership group, tasked with mentoring a developing backline that included emerging key defenders. While his on-field output at the Suns was modest, restricted to 18 games over two seasons, he retired in 2014 respected as a quintessential clubman who maximised his natural ability through discipline and tactical awareness.
