Bio
Drafted by Collingwood with pick 58 in the 2015 National Draft from the Oakleigh Chargers, Tom Phillips quickly carved out a niche as an elite endurance athlete capable of dominating the wings. Renowned for his aerobic capacity and ability to spread from the contest, he became a vital link player for the Magpies, accumulating possessions at will and playing a key role in the club's run to the 2018 Grand Final. His breakout form during this era saw him selected in the 22under22 side, cementing his reputation as one of the league's most industrious outside midfielders.
However, Phillips' time at Collingwood ended abruptly due to the club's documented salary cap pressure at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Offloaded to Hawthorn for a late draft pick, he arrived at Waverley Park looking to expand his game, potentially moving into an inside midfield role. The transition proved difficult, as he struggled to recapture his best touch while rotating between the wing and half-forward line. After two seasons with the Hawks yielded diminishing returns and limited impact, he was delisted at the end of 2022, leaving the top level as a player whose prime was arguably disrupted by list management circumstances beyond his control.
