Stats
Bio
Recruited from Sunshine, Tom Sutherland was a heavy-set key forward whose twelve-season career was defined by persistence in the face of constant injury setbacks. Standing 183cm and weighing over 90kg, he had the physical presence to dominate the goal square but struggled to string games together, resulting in a stop-start journey across three separate clubs. While rarely a week-to-week fixture in the senior side, he proved his capability with a stunning six-goal haul for St Kilda against Richmond in the opening round of 1936. After brief stints with Footscray and the Saints, he played his most consistent football late in his career at Hawthorn before his time in the VFL was brought to a premature close by his enlistment in the Australian Army during World War II.
