Bio
Recruited from Bairnsdale, Tommy Alvin became a cult figure at Carlton during the 1980s and early 1990s, instantly recognisable by his long blond hair and knee-high socks. A tenacious small defender and tagger, Alvin built his game on disciplined checking and relentless pressure rather than silken skills. His ability to shut down dangerous opposition rovers made him an invaluable component of the Blues' defensive unit, allowing the team's attacking midfielders the freedom to push forward with confidence.
A premiership player in 1987, Alvin was a consistent performer who rarely lowered his colours, eventually earning state selection for Victoria. He remained a one-club player throughout his 218-game career, serving as a reliable backbone for the side during a successful era for the club. By the time he retired in 1994, Alvin had cemented his status as a fan favourite who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his ability through grit and determination.
