A product of the dominant Camberwell side that swept three consecutive premierships in the Melbourne Districts Football Association during the early 1920s, Tommy Carswell was a half-forward who earned a brief trial with St Kilda. He joined the Saints during a particularly lean era for the club, making his senior debut against Carlton in Round 13, 1925, where he was brought into the side alongside fellow recruit Jack Rae. Carswell managed to hit the scoreboard during his short stint, booting his solitary career goal in his second match against Melbourne, but he struggled to cement a regular place in the senior lineup. After adding just one more appearance early in the 1926 season, he departed the VFL to continue his football journey in the Association with Brighton, where he settled into a role on the wing.
