Bio
Recruited from the successful Williamstown CYMS premiership side of 1928, Tommy Gubbins was a utility player who filled roles across the centreline and half-back flank for Essendon. He broke into the senior lineup in 1930 and became a regular fixture for two seasons, noted for his defensive efforts and ability to rotate through the midfield. However, his VFL career was effectively ended by the economic realities of the Great Depression; he left the club after the 1931 season to secure employment in the country town of Carwarp, near Mildura. Gubbins later returned to Melbourne football, playing for Mordialloc in the Federal Football League before a brief three-game stint with Williamstown in the VFA in 1936.
