Bio
Born Thomas Arrowsmith to actor parents, he played under his father’s stage name and arrived at Melbourne in 1899 after honing his craft in the VFA with Richmond and Carlton. A crafty rover who was equally dangerous resting in a forward pocket, Ryan made a startling debut by booting five goals against St Kilda. He became a central figure in Melbourne's historic 1900 premiership campaign, leading the club's goalkicking tally for the season and contributing a vital goal in the upset Grand Final victory over Fitzroy. Following a hiatus in 1903, he transferred to St Kilda for one final season at VFL level before retiring.
