Bio
Born in the Victorian gold mining hamlet of Deep Lead, Toner Hosking was a teenage prodigy who was thrust into the VFL spotlight as a 16-year-old. Recruited to South Melbourne in 1908, he faced the unenviable task of trying to crack into a powerhouse "Bloods" lineup that was building toward—and eventually won—the 1909 Premiership. As a result, his senior opportunities were scarce, managing just nine appearances over three seasons as the club enjoyed its golden era. Unable to cement a regular spot in the star-studded side, he eventually crossed to the VFA to play for Hawthorn in 1915 before leaving the game to become a grazier on the Mornington Peninsula. While his top-level football career was brief, Hosking left a lasting community legacy in Shoreham, where he served as the founding President of the local CFA brigade for over a decade.
