Bio
Born in South Australia but recruited from the VAFA's University Blues, Tony Anderson was a stylish and pacy half-back flanker who became a key defensive pillar for Melbourne during the 1960s. After being pursued by the Demons for several seasons, he made an immediate impact upon his 1963 debut, cementing his spot in the backline with his strong marking and rebound. Anderson reached the pinnacle of his career in 1964, playing through a significant knee injury to help Melbourne secure the premiership against Collingwood in a famous Grand Final. However, his career trajectory was altered by a bizarre and unfortunate incident in 1965; a fall from a horse during a club picnic led to a severe battle with tetanus, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. While persistent knee trouble restricted his output in subsequent years until his retirement in early 1969, Anderson is remembered as a courageous premiership defender from the club's golden era under Norm Smith.
