Bio
Recruited from Seymour in the Goulburn Valley, Tony Barnes was a capable forward who made a brief appearance at Melbourne before the increasing demands of VFL football cut his career short. He broke into the senior side for the opening round of the 1980 season and demonstrated a keen eye for goal, averaging nearly a major per game during his limited opportunities in the forward line. Despite showing early promise as a scoring option, Barnes struggled to adapt to the rising professionalism of the league. He abruptly walked out on the Demons midway through the 1981 season, reportedly citing dissatisfaction with the heavy training workloads, and returned to country football without adding to his seven-game tally.
