Bio
A stalwart of the Mayne Tigers in the QAFL, Tony Beckett holds a unique place in history as the first player recruited directly from the local Queensland competition to debut for the Brisbane Bears. Already a premiership player and state captain prior to the Bears’ entry into the VFL, he was a mature-age recruit who brought leadership and class to the fledgling side. Beckett was a pacy, courageous left-footed wingman who could push forward and hit the scoreboard, famously collecting 19 disposals and kicking a crucial goal in the club's first-ever home win against Melbourne at Carrara. Although lingering issues from a serious knee reconstruction the previous year restricted him to just six senior appearances in 1987, his standing as a Queensland football pioneer was later recognised with induction into the state's Hall of Fame and Mayne’s Team of the 20th Century.
