Recruited from Bentleigh, Tony "Trout" Elshaug began his VFL career as a teenage prodigy at Melbourne, where his pace and ball-winning ability saw him represent Victoria at just 19 years of age. Despite his early promise, Elshaug grew disenchanted with the Demons' lack of on-field success and requested a trade, eventually crossing to Essendon ahead of the 1984 season. The move proved to be a masterstroke; playing as a dangerous roving forward, he became a key component of Kevin Sheedy's dominant mid-80s lineup. His time at Windy Hill culminated in the 1985 premiership, where he tasted the ultimate success he had sought when leaving Melbourne.

Elshaug's later playing days were hampered by persistent knee injuries, which restricted his output at Essendon and eventually led to a short-lived stint at Collingwood in 1988. After retiring from the top level, he etched his name into VFA folklore by captain-coaching Dandenong to a premiership in 1991. Post-retirement, Elshaug transitioned into a highly respected off-field figure, serving as a long-time assistant coach under Denis Pagan and later establishing himself as a shrewd recruiting and list manager, most notably helping shape the St Kilda lists of the late 2000s and 2010s.
