Recruited from Norwood in South Australia, Tony Francis made an immediate and dramatic impact upon arriving at Collingwood in 1990. Standing at just 169cm, the diminutive rover compensated for his lack of height with relentless endurance and ferocious tackling pressure, quickly establishing himself as a cult figure at Victoria Park. His debut season was memorable for both the ultimate success of a premiership and significant controversy, as he served a six-week suspension for a kicking incident involving West Coast's Murray Wrensted. Despite this interruption, he returned to play a vital role in ending the Magpies' 32-year flag drought, bringing a frenetic energy to the midfield that defined the club's early 90s era.

Francis backed up his debut season by winning the Copeland Trophy as Collingwood's best and fairest in 1991, cementing his status as a premier on-baller. Known for his ability to run opponents into the ground, he remained a key contributor for the Magpies throughout the decade, although injuries occasionally interrupted his momentum. After nine seasons and 156 games in black and white, he was delisted at the end of 1998. St Kilda offered him a lifeline via the pre-season draft, but his stint at Moorabbin was brief; he played just five games in 1999 before retiring from AFL football.
