Bio
Recruited from Lalor, Tony Free progressed through Richmond's under-19 development pathways to make his senior debut in 1987. A tough-as-nails defender who typically patrolled the half-back flank or back pocket, Free compensated for a lack of elite silk with uncompromising courage and a desperate defensive work rate. He became a beacon of consistency during a lean period for the Tigers, winning the Jack Dyer Medal in both 1989 and 1993 and earning selection in the All-Australian team on two occasions.
His leadership capabilities were identified early, leading to his appointment as Richmond captain in 1994 at just 24 years of age. However, his prime years were cruelly interrupted by chronic knee issues, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Despite repeated attempts to return to senior football, the toll on his body forced him to retire in 1997 after 133 games. Off the field, he left a significant mark through his heavy involvement with the AFL Players' Association and later as a player agent, ensuring his influence on the game extended well beyond his premature playing exit.
