Teams

Recruited from the Mildura Imperials after choosing the Swans over Footscray, Tony Haenen developed into a reliable key position player for South Melbourne during the late 1960s. Standing 191cm, he was initially deployed as a ruckman but transitioned to centre half-back as the league's ruck stocks grew taller, relying on his strong hands and ability to hold his ground in contested situations. He enjoyed a standout season in 1970, finishing equal-third in the club's Brownlow Medal count and playing in his only VFL final, but his time at the Lakeside Oval ended prematurely in 1971 following a disagreement with coach Norm Smith. Haenen subsequently carved out a formidable legacy outside the VFL, captain-coaching North Launceston in Tasmania before returning to Victoria to anchor the ruck in Port Melbourne's celebrated 1976 VFA premiership side.
