Bio
Recruited from Tasmanian powerhouse Sandy Bay, Tony Martyn was a polished wingman who arrived at Melbourne with a reputation as a prolific ball-winner and a triple premiership player in his home state. He made a seamless transition to VFL level, relying on his high work rate and clean distribution to hold a regular spot in the senior side throughout his debut season. Despite his on-field promise, Martyn's career at the Demons was brief; finding the grueling training standards of new coach Ron Barassi too demanding, he requested a clearance midway through the 1981 season. Rather than returning directly to Tasmania, he made a successful detour to the SANFL to win a premiership with Port Adelaide, ultimately leaving a legacy as one of Tasmania's finest football exports rather than a long-term Melbourne player.
