Bio
Arriving in the VFL with a formidable reputation, Tony McGuinness had already established himself as a teenage prodigy in South Australia, winning the Magarey Medal at Glenelg aged just 18 and captaining the Tigers to the 1985 premiership. He made an immediate impact at Footscray, transferring his prolific ball-winning ability to the national stage with ease. As a rover, McGuinness was renowned for his elite professionalism and consistency, claiming the Charles Sutton Medal in 1987 and earning All-Australian honours during his five seasons at the Western Oval.
When the Adelaide Football Club entered the AFL in 1991, McGuinness returned home to become the club's inaugural captain, a role he held until 1994. He led the Crows through their formative years with a distinctively determined leadership style, anchoring the midfield alongside fellow seasoned recruits. His on-field approach was characterised by relentless running and an ability to accumulate possessions in heavy traffic, attributes that saw him win the Crows' Club Champion award in 1993 and earn a second All-Australian blazer. He retired in 1996 as a respected figure who successfully bridged the gap between SANFL dominance and the expanding national competition.
