Bio
Standing 199cm, Tony Smith was a towering ruckman who took a unique path to the Sydney Swans via Queensland. Originally from Finley in the Riverina, Smith moved north as a child and was already serving in the Queensland Police Force when he was scouted playing for Morningside in the QAFL. Urged by his father, a lifelong South Melbourne fan, he moved to Sydney and broke into the senior side late in the 1986 season. Despite his physical presence, Smith’s VFL career was short-lived, spanning just 17 games over three seasons as he juggled the demands of elite football with his burgeoning business interests. He retired from the top level at the end of 1988 to focus on a successful career in property development, though he remained active in the local game as a captain-coach for North Shore in the Sydney Football League.
