Bio
Recruited to Fitzroy, Tony Woods initiated his AFL journey in the late 1980s but struggled to establish a permanent foothold at the Lions. Following the 1990 season, he crossed to Collingwood, where he spent the early 1990s as a utility player without fully cementing his status as a week-to-week lock in the senior side. It was his third club, Hawthorn, that provided the stability his career required; crossing to the Hawks ahead of the 1995 season, Woods evolved from a fringe player into a mainstay of the defensive group during a significant rebuilding phase for the club.
Renowned for his discipline and concentration, Woods settled into a role as a tight-checking defender capable of shutting down dangerous small forwards and creating drive from the back half. His resilience and professional approach allowed him to play the vast majority of his career matches in the brown and gold, racking up over 140 games for the Hawks. By the time he retired in 2002, he was respected as a consistent performer who provided crucial experience and leadership to a young defensive unit.
