Bio
Taken by Melbourne with the first selection in the 1997 National Draft, Travis Johnstone arrived with the weight of significant expectation as the grandson of legendary Demons coach Norm Smith. A naturally gifted ball-user, he established himself as a rebounding half-back and outside midfielder renowned for his poise, vision, and ability to hit targets that few others could see. At his best, such as during his Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal-winning season in 2005, he was one of the league's most damaging distributors, though his languid movement style occasionally drew criticism regarding his defensive pressure and intensity.
Despite his standing as a club favourite, Johnstone was traded to the Brisbane Lions following the 2007 season as the Demons sought to secure a first-round draft pick to aid a rebuilding phase. The move was intended to provide Johnstone with a fresh start under his former junior coach Leigh Matthews, but he struggled to consistently recapture his peak form in Queensland. He played three seasons for the Lions, passing the 200-game milestone and providing experienced delivery inside 50, before being delisted at the conclusion of the 2010 season.
