Recruited from St Kilda CBC, Travis Payze broke into the senior lineup during the club's historic 1966 season. While he managed four appearances in his debut year, he missed selection for the premiership side, eventually establishing himself as a regular fixture in the seasons that followed. Standing 189cm, Payze developed into a versatile key position player who was equally effective at centre half-forward or centre half-back, while also possessing the capacity to pinch-hit in the ruck when required.

Payze was renowned for his strong overhead marking and reliability, attributes that made him a central figure in the Saints' lineup of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He played a pivotal role in the club's 1971 campaign, lining up at centre half-forward in the Grand Final loss to Hawthorn. After retiring in 1974 as a one-club player, Payze maintained a lifelong contribution to Moorabbin, serving as a board member for many years and stepping in as club president during a turbulent administrative period in 2000.
