Bio
Recruited from the Northern Knights with the second overall pick in the 2007 National Draft, Trent Cotchin arrived at Richmond with immense expectations. His early years were hampered by persistent Achilles and ankle issues, yet he quickly established himself as a premier midfielder, notably being awarded the 2012 Brownlow Medal retrospectively alongside Sam Mitchell. Thrust into the captaincy at just 22 years of age, Cotchin shouldered the heavy burden of leadership during a turbulent era for the club, eventually spearheading the cultural overhaul that transformed the Tigers from consistent underachievers into a genuine powerhouse.
While his early career was defined by silky skills and high possession counts, Cotchin's playstyle underwent a significant evolution during Richmond's dynasty years. He willingly sacrificed personal statistics to become a ferocious contest hunter, setting the physical standard for his teammates inside the centre square. Known for his desperation and crashing into packs, he morphed into a battering ram who prioritised team acts over individual accolades, epitomising the high-pressure, selfless brand of football implemented by coach Damien Hardwick.
