Bio
Recruited as one of Gold Coast's foundation 17-year-old access selections, Trent McKenzie immediately established a reputation as a damaging rebounding defender possessing one of the most lethal left boots in the competition. Dubbed "The Cannon" for his ability to launch goals from well outside fifty, he was a fixture in the Suns' backline during their formative years, racking up over 100 games for the club. However, after falling out of favour and struggling for consistency, he was delisted following the 2017 season, eventually receiving a career lifeline from Port Adelaide as a delisted free agent.
While his start at Alberton was initially slow, McKenzie successfully reinvented himself from a loose-checking rebounder into a courageous, undersized key defender. He became a reliable pillar in the Power's backline during their premiership contention window, often tasked with nullifying much larger key forwards through disciplined bodywork and astute reading of the play. Although persistent injuries limited his availability in his final seasons, McKenzie retired in 2024 having transformed a speculative second chance into a significant second act at the elite level.
