Bio
Recruited from Epping in the Diamond Valley, Johnson famously demonstrated his loyalty before even donning the red and blue, rejecting lucrative £1000 contract offers from Fitzroy and Collingwood to sign with the club he supported for free. After serving National Service in 1953 and developing in the reserves, he burst into the senior side in 1955, immediately winning the club's Best First Year Player award. This impact marked the beginning of a golden run, as Johnson became a fixture in Norm Smith's relentless dynasty, featuring in three consecutive premierships from 1955 to 1957.
Dubbed "The Phantom" for his ability to quietly but effectively nullify opponents with minimal fuss, Johnson was the ultimate team man. While primarily known as a close-checking back pocket who solidified the defence, his versatility was substantial enough that he occupied centre half-forward during the 1957 flag triumph. Although he missed the 1959 premiership campaign, he returned to the back pocket to secure his fourth flag in the wet 1960 Grand Final rout of Collingwood. He retired in 1962 as a four-time premiership player and a Melbourne Life Member, cementing his status as one of the unsung heroes of the Demons' greatest era.
