Bio
Recruited from Lakes Entrance and Koo-wee-rup with pick 75 in the 1988 National Draft, Ty Esler arrived at Punt Road as a towering ruck prospect. Standing at a chemically-tested 206cm, he holds the distinction of being one of the tallest players to ever represent Richmond, initially validating that height advantage by winning the club's Under-19 Best and Fairest and playing in a premiership in 1989. A traditional tap ruckman known for his strong overhead marking and ability to palm the ball to advantage, his transition to senior football was gradual, with his field kicking often cited as an area for improvement. After breaking into the senior side for a handful of games between 1991 and 1993, his final season was derailed by an unfortunate work accident that restricted his availability, leading to his delisting after just 12 senior appearances. Esler subsequently carved out a successful career at state and local level, finishing runner-up in Frankston's VFA best and fairest before winning a premiership and the Morrison Medal with Tatura in the Goulburn Valley League.
