Bio
A former soccer goalkeeper who switched codes later than most, Tylar Young took an unconventional path to the AFL via North Albury and the Richmond VFL program before being selected by the Tigers in the 2022 Rookie Draft. Initially brought in as defensive depth, he was rapidly thrust into a key defensive post due to a severe injury crisis at Punt Road, often tasked with locking down the opposition's most dangerous tall forwards despite his relative inexperience. While his athleticism and closing speed were significant assets, he battled to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the Tigers' back six, with his development notably interrupted by a ruptured ACL in 2024. After 35 games across three seasons in the yellow and black, Young moved to West Coast for the 2026 season, recruited by the Eagles to add mature-age durability and spoiling capability to a developing defensive unit.
