Born in Croatia, Val Perovic moved to Australia as a child and commenced his VFL career with St Kilda, where he developed into a formidable key defender. Despite his consistency over seven seasons at Moorabbin, his departure was precipitated by the Saints' severe financial instability, which saw the club effectively sell him to Carlton prior to the 1980 season to generate much-needed funds. This transfer proved to be the making of his career, allowing him to slot into a dominant Blues outfit that was entering a premiership window.

Perovic immediately solidified the fullback position at Carlton, playing an instrumental role in the club's back-to-back flag victories in 1981 and 1982. Renowned for his booming left-foot kick and raking torpedo punts, he became a genuine cult hero, with fans famously chanting "Woof!" in unison every time he launched the ball from defence. While he was an uncompromising and physical opponent, his legacy is defined by his contribution to a golden era for the Blues and his enduring popularity on the terraces.
