Bio
Recruited from the Gippsland town of Maffra via the prestigious Xavier College football program, Vernon Lanigan was a depth player who briefly featured for South Melbourne in the early 1920s. He was given his first opportunity at senior level in the final round of the 1920 season, a common time for clubs to trial new talent in dead rubber fixtures. Lanigan added just two further appearances to his tally the following year, struggling to secure a permanent place in a side that was beginning to rebuild around incoming stars like Roy Cazaly. Unable to command a regular spot in the starting 18, his VFL career concluded after just three goalless games across two seasons.
