Bio
Sir Victor Hurley was a brilliant medical mind whose brief VFL career was a mere prelude to a life of distinguished public service. A product of Wesley College, he joined the Students as a defender in 1911, debuting against Richmond and holding his spot in the backline for the remainder of the season. While he showed promise on the field, his priority remained his studies at the University of Melbourne, where he eventually graduated with top honours in medicine and surgery. His football days effectively ended as his medical career accelerated, leading him to serve as a surgeon at Gallipoli during World War I and later as the RAAF’s Director of Medical Services in World War II. Ultimately knighted for his contributions to the field, Hurley is remembered less for his seven games of football and more as one of Australia’s most eminent surgeons and military officers.
