Recruited from the Northcote reserves and the RAAF service team, Wal Armour was a robust key position player who joined St Kilda during the player shortages of World War II. Standing 183cm and weighing 82kg, he possessed the size to hold down a key forward post or pinch-hit in the ruck, proving to be a reliable avenue to goal with an average of better than a major per game. He made his debut in 1944 and remained a fixture in the Saints' lineup through the end of the war and into the 1946 season. Like many wartime recruits, his VFL career was brief, concluding at the relatively young age of 25 as clubs restocked their lists with returning veterans and new talent in the immediate post-war era.
