Bio
Born in Stawell but establishing his football reputation in the West, Wal Gunnyon arrived at St Kilda via South Fremantle and active service in France during the First World War. A state representative for Western Australia in the 1921 Carnival, he joined the Saints as a seasoned mature-age recruit in 1922, bringing immediate experience to the Junction Oval. While initially deployed as a half-forward capable of hitting the scoreboard, the 183cm utility displayed significant versatility by shifting into a defensive role during his final seasons at the club. He eventually departed the VFL to captain-coach in the VFA, notably leading Oakleigh to a premiership in 1930.
