Bio
Hailing from Kiewa in north-east Victoria, Wal McGrath was a country recruit given a brief opportunity with North Melbourne during the club's struggling 1930 season. With the Shinboners destined for the wooden spoon and having managed just one solitary win for the year, the selectors looked to the bush for fresh talent, handing the 20-year-old his debut in Round 17 against Hawthorn at Arden Street. McGrath held his spot for the final match of the season against Richmond at Punt Road, where he managed to boot his only VFL goal. His tenure in the top flight was restricted to those two late-season appearances, essentially a trial run during the Depression era, after which he returned to country football in the Tallangatta district.
